Albuquerque, NM -The Utah Valley State softball team lost 5-4 and 7-2 to New Mexico on Saturday. The two losses dropped the Wolverines to 5-8.
The Wolverines fell behind 3-0 after two innings in both games. In the first game the Wolverines rallied to take a 4-3 lead after the top of the fifth inning.
In the third inning, UV cut the Lobo lead to 3-1. Kaeleigh Forsyth opened the inning with a double to center field and later scored after Cari Hamilton flied out to left field.
Utah Valley then scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead. The inning started with a Chris Jimenez single to right field. She then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Hamilton.
Rachel Hartgrove followed with a two-run homerun over left field to tie the score at three. Heidi Boyer later scored on a two-out Emily Zupan single to right field.
New Mexico countered by tying the game at four in the bottom of the fifth and won the game in the bottom of the seventh.
In the second game, Utah Valley fell behind 3-0 before scoring a run in the third inning. Jimenez, who reached base on a fielders choice, scored the run on a ground out by Zupan. But the Lobo lead quickly ballooned to 7-1 after New Mexico scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Wolverines final run came in the sixth inning. Jimenez had four hits in the two games.
The two teams play another double header on Sunday at Noon.
