Wolverines Top South Dakota State at Independent Tournament

Greeley, CO - All South Dakota State needed was one inning to beat the Utah Valley State softball team in the consolation game of the Independent tournament. The Wolverines led 3-0 after three and ?? innings but in the bottom of the fourth the Jacks scored four runs with two outs to earn the 4-3 win on Sunday.

Utah Valley had nine hits in the game. Three came from Rachel Hartgrove while Laurin Eppich and Cari Hamilton each had two.

Utah Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. Hartgrove started the scoring by hitting a two-out solo-homerun over the centerfield fence.

In the second inning Eppich reached base on a one-out single. Sara Roskelley then sacrificed bunted but she also reached base after the South Dakota State pitcher committed a throwing error. On the same play Eppich was able to score all the way first to up the UV lead to 2-0.

The Wolverines extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Roskelley hit a two-out triple to right field and Jackie Roberts followed with single to center that scored Roskelley.

Things fell apart for the Wolverines in the fourth when South Dakota State scored four runs with two outs to take a 4-3 lead. Starting pitcher Heidi Boyer retired the first two batters of the inning. South Dakota State had three singles, a walk and one batter was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive.

Roberts came in relief in the fourth and pitched two and 1/3 inning and allowed only one hit.

The Wolverines play their final home game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they host BYU. It will be the final home game for Hartgrove, Chris Jimenez and Emily Zupan.

Hartgrove and Hamilton were both named to the Independent All-Tournament team.
