ORLANDO, Florida - After losing the first game 28-30, Utah Valley State came back to win the next three 30-27, 30-20, 30-17 and secure the championship match of the UCF Fall Classic Saturday over host team Central Florida.
"We played great," said Wolverine coach Sam Atoa. "We kept our composure and didn't get frustrated after losing a tough game one and we were able to close out the match."
The Wolverines went 3-0 in the tournament and senior setter Lacee Koelliker was named tournament MVP. Junior Jessica Endres joined Koelliker on the All-Tournament team.
Three UV players recorded double-doubles in the match. Camie Manwill had 13 kills and 15 digs, Ashley Dallin finished with 12 kills and 12 digs, and Koelliker recorded 47 assists and 10 digs.
Endres had 12 kills and Ashley Brown tallied 10 kills to round out a very balanced Wolverine offensive attack. Chelsea Baugh continued to be solid on the back row digging up 24 UCF attack attempts.
The Wolverines as a team hit .237 for the match, including hitting an impressive .393 in the final set. UCF only hit .062 in a match in which the Wolverines collected 76 digs and 11 blocks.
UV improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Golden Knights dropped to 3-4.
The Wolverines are on the road again next Wednesday, September 6 against Idaho State for a 7:00 pm (MST) match. UV will then host the annual LaQuinta Invitational welcoming Weber State, Oral Roberts, and IPFW to the Shurian Family Activity Center September 8-9.
