Heck, Bailey Lead Rout of Longwood

Jan. 15, 2007

Box Score

Orem, Utah - It was a dominating evening for Utah Valley State as the Wolverines led Longwood University from start to finish in a 80-52 victory.

David Heck led four UV players in double figures. Heck scored 20 on 6-of-14 shooting while dishing out six assists. Chris Bailey added career-high tying 15 points and four steals while Matt Peterson (11) and Richard Troyer (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers.

"Chris brought a lot of energy and life to this game," head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "I don't think anybody on this team has tried harder to what the coaches ask than Chris Bailey."

Utah Valley shot an efficient 53 percent from the field while holding the Lancers to just 33 percent shooting. UV's 28-point victory over Longwood was its most lopsided victory since beating Montana State by 32 to open the 2006-07 season. The Wolverines also out-rebounded the Lancers, 40-24.

"We are making a more conscious effort to emphasize rebounding," Hunsaker said. "Everybody involved contributed on the backboards tonight."

The Wolverines got off to a quick start, jumping out to an early 10-3 lead thanks in part to a pair of Heck three-pointers.

"David came out and met the competitive challenge or guarding Maurice Sumter," Hunsaker said.

After Longwood scored consecutive baskets to cut the UV lead 17-12, Matt Peterson led the Wolverines back, scoring five straight points on a three-point play and another short jumper to push UV's lead to double figures.

Utah Valley's defense kept the Lancers in check, as Longwood only managed back-to-back baskets once in the first half.

With the Wolverines holding to a 29-21 lead, they finished the half with a 7-2 run over the final five minutes to take a 36-23 advantage to the break. Heck led all scorers in the first half, scoring 13 points while Richard Troyer added eight points and five rebounds off the bench in the first half.

Heck was also instrumental in holding the Lancers leading scorer (16.9 ppg), Maurice Sumter to just four points on 2-of-6 shooting in the first half.

The Wolverines held their 14-point lead in the early going of the second half as they had an answer to each Longwood basket.

Ahead 50-38, Utah Valley State went on a 9-0 run to build a 20-point lead. Four different wolverines scored during the run that put the game out of reach.

UV outscored Longwood, 21-14 over the final 10 minutes to finish the game with a 28-point win.

The Wolverines return to action Saturday when they welcome Johnson and Wales to the McKay Center. Tip time will be at 7:05.
