Gunnison, Colo. - Utah Valley State got back to its winning ways as the Wolverines won three of four duals at the Tracy Borah Duals. UV got a strong performance from freshman Justin Morrill who went a perfect 4-0 on the day.
"Overall, it's nice to get some wins," UV head coach Greg Williams said. "We saw some progression and that's what we want to see."
Utah Valley opened the day with a 35-10 victory over Mesa State. Justin Rawle pinned Kirk Piatt (3:57) to highlight the dual for the Wolverines. Marc Fenwick and Eric McAllister earned major decisions in their respective matches and Brock Jardine won by decision.
In the second dual, UV lost to Western State, 41-3. Morrill is the only Wolverines who won his match, earning a 5-2 decision over Chris Feije.
"Western is a good team," Williams said. "But we want to be at the point where we beat good teams. We lost a number of closely fought matches."
UV responded in its third dual, beating Air Force Prep, 26-9. Morrill pinned the Falcons Juan Carlos Pino (3:33) to score big for the Wolverines. Jardine and McAllister also registered major decision victories for Utah Valley. UV beat Air Force in every match the Wolverines competed in except for in the 165 class.
To finish the day, Utah Valley State beat New Mexico Highlands, 30-15. Jardine was the big scorer for the Wolverines as he pinned Jesse Valdez (2:21).
The Wolverines will return home for three consecutive weeks. Next week, UV will take on Wyoming at 5 p.m. in the Shurian Activities Center.
