BAKERSFIELD, Calif - Less than a week after having its winning streak snapped, Utah Valley bounced back starting a new streak as the Wolverines swept past Cal State Bakersfield 31-29, 30-23 and 30-27. The win marks UV's eighth in its last nine matches.
"We were better in transition tonight than we were earlier this week," UV head coach Sam Atoa said. "We still didn't pass the ball well, yet we were able to create opportunities."
The Wolverines were led offensively by Kayli Broadbent (14 kills, .387 hitting percentage) and Jessica Endres (12 kills, .409 hitting percentage). Endres also had five total blocks (one solo, four assists).
Defensively, Allyce Wilson recorded 24 digs (eight per game) while Camie Manwill added 15.
In the first game, UV trailed 18-11 and went on a 7-2 run to cut into the roadrunners lead. Back-to-back Broadbent kills cut the lead from seven to two points. The teams battled back and forth with CSU Bakersfield maintaining a two-point lead until the end of the game. Behind 26-28, the Wolverines scored three in a row capped by a a Kathleen Stevens service ace to re-gain the lead. UV later took the game on an attack error.
"Kathleen Stevens played a great match for us from the back row," Atoa said.
In the second game, UV had several long runs that helped them coast to a 30-23 win. The Wolverines had runs of 4-0 and 6-0 and finished the game with a 3-0 run.
Utah Valley carried its momentum to the third game as the Wolverines scored the first five points of the set. CSU Bakersfield came back with a 13-5 run to take a 13-10 lead and force a UV timeout. Not to be outdone, the Wolverines responded with an 11-3 run of their own to take a 21-16 lead. UV got three kills from Endres during the stretch. The lead proved to be enough as the Wolverines never trailed again.
The same two teams will face off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. (MT)
