OREM, Utah - For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Utah Valley women's basketball team got big production from its top three scorers and improved to 2-0 on the year with a 89-69 win over Cal State Fullerton.
Julie McMurray led the way with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds while Sandy Marvin and Robyn Fairbanks both added 18 as the three combined for 59 of the team's 89 points. Fairbanks had her second straight double-double with 11 rebounds. Asumi Nakayama came off the bench and dished out 10 assists and had three steals.
After hitting 56% from the field in Friday's season opening win over Mesa State, the Wolverines shot the ball well again, hitting 47% including 9-for-17 (53%) from the three-point line.
Toni Thomas had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead Fullerton in its season opener.
The Wolverines jumped out early, scoring the first eight points five of which came from Fairbanks, who was limited to just six minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls.
Marvin picked up her second foul with just under seven minutes to go with UV up 33-21 and was forced to join Fairbanks on the bench. Despite the fact the scorers were out for the rest of the half, the Wolverines outscored the Titans 18-10 to take a 51-30 lead at the break. Susie Cornejo scored all eight of her points during that run including a perfect 2-for-2 on threes.
In the second half, the lead stretched to as much as 30 after Marvin scored with 13:23 remaining.
Rebekah Peterson reached double figures for the second straight game, finishing with 10 points and four rebounds.
Up next for Utah Valley is an in-state match up at Southern Utah next Thursday night in Cedar City.
