OREM, Utah - Five Wolverines scored in double figures as Utah Valley overcame a quick Troy start on its way to a 72-51 home-opening victory.
UV set a school record for three-point shots in a game with 34. The Wolverines also tied the school record for three-pointers made with 12. Ryan Toolson led UV with 17 points. Matt Komenda provided a spark off the bench, scoring a career-high 12 points while grabbing five rebounds. Jordan Brady led the Wolverines with 10 boards to go along with 10 points.
The Trojans (1-2) from the Sun Belt Conference jumped out to an early 12-0 lead after hitting their first four shots of the game, all three-pointers.
"Troy is a very explosive offensive team," UV head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "They have great shooters and great athletes."
The Wolverines (2-2) responded, stepping up their defensive pressure and slowing down Troy's attacking defense and offense. UV went on a 24-3 run over the next nine minutes to take a 24-15 advantage.
After the Trojans hit their first four shots of the game, the Wolverines defensive pressure forced Troy to shoot just 15 percent (3-of-20) the rest of the half.
"We did a much better job than earlier this season defensive rebounding and taking care of the ball," Hunsaker said. "We started to chip away and eventually gained control of the game."
UV kept the pressure on in the second half, extending its lead to a game-high 30 points on a Komenda three-point play with 8:46 left.
The Wolverines will return to action on Saturday when they take on the University of Great Falls at 2:05 p.m. at the McKay Center.
