OREM, Utah - Five players reached double figures as Utah Valley ran away from Mesa State, 94-58, in the season opener on Friday night in Orem.
Sandy Marvin led way 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting, Robyn Fairbanks hit 7-for-10 to finish with 17 points just 17 minutes to go along with 11 rebounds and five steals. Julie McMurray had 15 points on 5-for-8 from the field as the top three returning scorers from last season combined to score 51 points on 19-for-29 (66%) shooting.
Lauren Smith scored a career-high 12 points, hitting 5-for-6 from the field and Rebekah Peterson rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points including 3-for-4 on three-pointers.
Overall, Utah Valley hit 56.5% (35-for-62) from the field while Mesa State shot just 33.9% (20-for-59).
Marvin tied a school record with six steals as UV caused 32 turnovers and stole the ball 23 times, leading to 43 points off turnovers.
The score was tied at 10 with 15:54 remaining in the first half when the Wolverines went on a 17-0 run over the next 6:47 to take control of the game.
The Mavericks used a mini run late in the half to trim the lead to 12 (44-32) by the half.
The Wolverines came out on fire to start the second half, using a 15-0 run to build a 27 point lead with 15:10 left in the game.
Kelsie Gourdin led Mesa State with 15 points while Brittany Fowler had 11 points and seven rebounds.
It will be a quick turnaround for Utah Valley as Cal State Fullerton will be in town for a 3:05 tip off on Saturday afternoon.
