Chubbock, ID- The Utah Valley softball team (16-24) got solid pitching from Jackie Roberts, Heidi Boyer and Ashley Forsberg to beat Idaho State 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Wolverines lost game 1 3-2.
Roberts (7-8) earned the win by striking out six and scattering five hits in five and 2/3 innings of work. Boyer finished the sixth inning by striking out a left-handed batter and Forsberg earned her second save of the season by striking out one batter in the seventh inning.
"Jackie threw solid to start the game," Utah Valley coach Todd Fairbourne said. "Boyer came in to face one batter and she did her job. Ashley came in at a critical time and stepped up big. She didn't have any free passes because she had to face their best hitters."
Sara Roskelley led the Wolverines offensive attack with two of the teams' 10 hits. Nine different players had hits in the victory.
Boyer got the Wolverines off to nice start by hitting a two-run bomb over the right field fence. Boyer drove in Jasmine Joyce, who reached base via an Idaho State fielding error.
The Bengals countered with a run in the bottom half of the first to cut the Utah Valley lead to 2-1. The Wolverines extended their lead in the sixth after Jamie Tonis led off with a double to right-center. A batter later with one out, Roskelley reach base on a bunt that allowed Tonis to score after the ISU catcher committed a throwing error. Roskelley later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jasmine Joyce.
ISU added a run in the bottom of the sixth but Forsberg entered the game in the seventh with one runner on base and proceeded to retire the side. She ended the game by striking out Idaho State's top homerun hitter, Heather Dixon.
In game 1, the Wolverines fell behind 3-0 after the first inning. UV cut the Bengal lead to 3-2 in the fifth after it took advantage of two Idaho State errors. Lindsay Dyer led the inning off with a single to centerfield. She advanced to second on the play after Bengal centerfielder Nicole Antonoplos misplayed the ball. Madi Bowen then sacrificed Jordan Chaney, who pinch ran for Dyer, to third.
Chaney scored UV's first run after Hamilton reached base on a throwing error by Idaho State pitcher Lindsay Boughton. The error moved Hamilton to second and she later scored on two wild pitches by Boughton. The Wolverine rally fell short in the final two innings as they managed only one hit.
Corie Jensen suffered the loss despite striking out seven and allowing only four hits, three of which came in the first inning.
Utah Valley returns home to host Northwest Nazarene on Monday in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
