Joyce Hits For the Cycle in Doubleheader Sweep

April 16, 2007

Box Score

Orem, UT- The Utah Valley softball team upped its record 18-24 after beating Northwest Nazarene 10-1 and 15-0 in five innings. Utah Valley junior Jasmine Joyce led the Wolverines from the plate by hitting for the cycle in the game 1 victory. She ended the game by hitting a walk-off grand slam in the fifth inning. For the two games she was 5-for-7 with seven RBI.

"The biggest thing Joyce does is she recognizes speed and she makes adjustments at the plate," Utah Valley coach Todd Fairbourne said. "That is what you should do if you know how to hit. Joyce obviously does."

Utah Valley scored its 25 runs on 23 hits and 13 different players had hits on the day. Along with Joyce, Cari Hamilton, Madi Bowen, Jamie Tonis, Marisa Lindgren and Cheryl McGraw all had multiple hits.

Jackie Roberts earned the win in game 1 by pitching the final two and 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out two. Ashly Forsberg picked up her second win of the season by striking out six and giving up three hits in five innings of work.

"We came out and did what we were supposed to do and it allowed for a lot of people to get in," Fairbourne said.

In game 1, Utah Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Tonis led off with a single up the middle and later advanced to second on a sacrifice. After a walk by Lindsay Dyer, Joyce hit a two-out triple that platted Tonis and Dyer. Joyce then scored on an RBI single by Hamilton.

After Nazarene scored a run in the top of the third, UV countered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer by Heidi Boyer over the scoreboard in left-centerfield to extend the lead to 5-1.

Utah Valley added a run in the fourth inning to lead 6-1. In the fifth, Bowen, Paulsen, and Tonis all reached base to set up Joyce's game-ending grand slam.

In the second game, Utah Valley batted through the line up in the first inning to score eight runs as the first eight batters reached base before Northwest Nazarene was able to get an out. Corie Jensen and McGraw both hit homeruns in the inning.

UV led 12-0 after three innings and added three more runs in the fourth. Lindgren hit a solo-homerun in the inning.

Utah Valley plays host to Utah State in a doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
