Boyer's Bat, Roberts Arm Lead to Sweep

April 17, 2007

Box Score

Orem, Utah - Utah Valley used a little bit of both clutch hitting and clutch pitching on its way to a doubleheader sweep over Utah State, 7-6 and 4-2.

Heidi Boyer came up huge for the Wolverines (20-24) in game one, going 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, including a walk-off shot, and four RBI. In game two UV cruised behind a complete-game by pitcher Jackie Roberts. Roberts gave up only one earned run while striking out seven.

"I'm proud of the girls," head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "They did what they needed to do to stay close in the first game before Heidi came up with the big hit."

In game one, USU jumped ahead in the top of the second as the Aggies put together three consecutive doubles to jump ahead, 2-0. The Wolverines got out of the jam, allowing only two runs as Utah State left the bases loaded.

UV bounced back in its side of the second. The Wolverines took the lead with one swing of Roskelley's bat as she drove a line drive over the left field fence. Roskelley's two-out home run scored Jamie Tonis who singled and Natalie Paulsen who drew a walk on a full count. Utah Valley scored on a solo homer by Heidi Boyer in the third to extend its lead to 4-2.

The Aggies bounced back and took the lead in the top of the fourth on four runs, regaining the lead at 6-4. USU scored the four runs on a pair of home runs. Amy Schiable hit a solo home run and was followed by a three-run shot by Tara Evans.

Utah State was able to hang on to the lead until the bottom of the seventh when UV's Boyer smoked her second home run with two on to win the game.

The Wolverines carried the momentum into game two, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. UV back five consecutive singles, the last three being RBI hits from Boyer, Corie Jensen and Tonis. Jackie Roberts added a RBI double in the bottom of the third.

USU got its first run on a RBI double by catcher Jami Uragami. Uragami's double plated Evans who reached on an error.

Roberts cruised on the mound until the fifth inning when the Aggies pieced three hits together including a RBI single by Jamie Fife to cut the UV lead to 4-2. Roberts stuck it out as USU would not get any closer.

"The second game was all Jackie," Fairbourne said. "I was about to pull her out and she told me she was okay, then she backed it up with her play on the field."

UV returns to action this weekend as the Wolverines play a pair of doubleheaders at Northern Colorado on Saturday and Sunday.
