Oct. 24, 2008

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University's Kayli Broadbent and Kristin Anderson each recorded nine kills apiece in a three-set sweep (26-24, 25-13, 25-22) at home against Texas-Pan American Friday. With the win, the Wolverines improved to 7-9 on the year, and the Lady Broncs fell to 4-13.

As a team, UVU hit .212 and recorded nine total team blocks while holding UTPA to a .069 attack percentage. Other notables included junior libero Allyce Wilson's 19 digs and Anderson's five total blocks on the night.

"We had a good idea of what they were going to do in each rotation," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said after the match. "We took them out of their system quite a bit, which helped us control the ball more."

UVU led by as much as six points mid way through the first set up 15-9, but relinquished the lead late when they went down 20-21. The Wolverines regained the lead at 23-22 and won the set 26-24. In total, there were five tied scores in the final 11 points. Utah Valley hit .216 in the set led by Anderson with four kills on eight swings and a block assist. Defensively, Wilson tallied seven digs, and the Wolverines held the Lady Broncs to a .158 attack percentage.

Utah Valley won the second set 25-13 thanks to a .276 hitting percentage and six total team blocks. UVU held UTPA to only eight kills in the set and 10 attack errors for a team attack percentage of -.04. Freshman outside hitter Jaicee Kuresa led all attackers with four kills in the set.

Broadbent served the first eight points of the third set as Utah Valley sprinted to a 7-0 lead. The Lady Broncs responded winning the next four points and battled back to get within one at 10-9. Texas-Pan American did not tie the set until 19 points later at 19-19, but never pulled ahead in the third set. UVU won the set 25-22 on a service ace from freshman Melissa Fifita and sealed the 3-0 sweep.

The last time these two teams met, Utah Valley beat Texas-Pan American 3-0 on October 10 in Edinburg, Texas.
