Wolverines Hold Off NJIT to End Losing Streak

Feb. 7, 2008

OREM, Utah - Robyn Fairbanks and Julie McMurray scored 20 points apiece as Utah Valley held off NJIT, 78-69, to end its four-game losing streak.

The Wolverines (14-7) also got 16 points from Sandy Marvin and a career-high 10 points from Blake Reynolds while hitting 52.4 percent from the field for the game. Jordyn Bowen dished out a career-high six assists, matching teammate Hollie Beaman for game-high honors.

Fairbanks, who 9-for-12 from the field, had just 11 points when she was forced to the bench after picking her fourth foul with just over 10 minutes remaining.

When she returned at the seven-minute mark she scored nine points, leading the WOlverines on a 16-7 run to take 76-63 lead with 2:19 left in the game.

"Robyn made some moves and showed some aggression that was exciting to see. Once again she put us on her shoulders." said head coach Cathy Nixon.

Fairbanks also had 10 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season while scoring 20 or more for the ninth straight game.

Asumi Nakayama scored all seven of her points late, hitting three key shots over the final five minutes in helping UV to the victory.

In the first half, Utah Valley scored 10 straight points on the strength of three-pointers from McMurray and Marvin to take a 33-21 lead.

The Wolverines led by 10, 39-29, after a first half in which the two teams combined to commit 25 turnovers. Just eight turnovers total were committed in the second half.

NJIT (6-14) was led by Katie Piekielski's 18 points while Jessica Gerald added 17. The Highlanders will host Utah Valley on February 21st in Newark, New Jersey.

Up next for the Wolverines is Texas-Pan American on Saturday at 3:05pm. UV can match its school-record 15th win with a win against the Lady Broncs.

Saturday's game is also "Pack the House" and "Think Pink" day at the McKay Center. All fans are invited to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness. $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to help breast cancer research.
