LOGAN, Utah - After sweeping the La Quinta Invitational over the weekend at home, the Utah Valley women's volleyball team (2-6) fell to in-state foe Utah State (2-9) Tuesday in three sets (23-25, 17-25, 19-25) on the road.
Sophomore Kayli Broadbent had nine kills to lead all Wolverine attackers. Junior Allyce Wilson also had 10 digs in the contest. UVU as a team recorded six total team blocks and hit .031 against USU.
"We led in every single set and sometimes by several points," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "Somewhere in the middle of the sets we made a few errors and let them get to us. We played great for half of each game, but just let it slip away from us. There were some really good things that we were doing, but we needed to play the whole set."
The Wolverines did not give up the lead in the first set until the Aggies took it at 19-18 as the home team went on to take the first set 25-23. Utah Valley had an early lead again in the second set, but Utah State pulled away midway through and opened a two-sets-to-none lead with a 25-17 victory. The Aggies took the lead for the first time in the third set again at 19-18 and rolled to 19-25 win to complete the sweep.
Utah Valley will travel to the Pacific Northwest to face Washington State this Friday with the match scheduled to start at 8 p.m. MST. After the road trip, Atoa's squad will return to the Shurian Family Activity center for five consecutive home events beginning Sept. 23 against Weber State.
