LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Utah Valley University women's volleyball team (0-5) lost to No. 13 Oregon (5-1) in three sets Saturday (12-25, 18-25, 18-25) in the Wolverine's last matches of the Jayhawk Invitational.
Junior middle blocker Kristin Anderson had eight kills and three blocks against the Ducks, and sophomore outside hitter Kayli Broadbent recorded seven kills in the match. UVU as a team also recorded five service aces in the contest.
"I think we did okay, but Oregon is just a very good team with some very good athletes," Utah Valley head coach Sam Atoa said. "I thought that we did compete and try our best. We still have a long ways to go to compete at Oregon's level, but we'll learn from this experience and get another step closer."
The Wolverines dropped the first set 12-25, but came out strong in the second set and took a 7-2 lead thanks in part to service aces from freshman Sarah Clement and sophomore Kathleen Stevens. Atoa's contingent held the lead until the Ducks regained it at 11-12 as UVU fell 18-25. The Wolverines held another early lead in the third set, but again lost it at 9-10 on their way to another 18-25 defeat.
After playing the first five matches of the season on the road, the Wolverines are ready for their first home events of the season. Utah Valley will host North Texas Friday and Idaho State Saturday at the Shurian Family Activities Center. Both matches are slated to start at 7 p.m.
