POCATELLO, Idaho - For the third time in four matches, Utah Valley went five sets, and for the first time in five sets this year, the Wolverines were victorious.
In the deciding set, UVU's Kayli Broadbent had nine of her season-high 25 kills and Camie Manwill added three of her 11 kills in leading the Wolverines to the 23-25, 25-23, 25-13, 23-25, 15-12 victory over Idaho State.
"We felt like we were struggling in certain areas and we felt like we needed to put the team on Kayli's back and she carried us through. I was proud of her to be able to come through at the end and close it out," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "Nine points of a 15-point set is a lot and we needed every single one."
Behind Broadbent, who also had 14 digs, and Manwill, freshman Erica Nish had a career-high 10 kills and Sarah Clement tied a season-high with nine kills. Chelsea Fa'alogo set a career-high with 58 assists to go along with 10 digs, while Allyce Jones had 20 digs.
After kills by Broadbent and Jaicee Kuresa, UVU (14-7) led 12-9 in the final set. Two attack errors by UVU let the Bengals (9-10) back into the set at 12-11. Broadbent had back-to-back kills to take it to set point. After ISU scored a point, Broadbent finished off the Bengals with a kill.
UVU dropped previous five-set matches to NJIT and Utah State.
"We learned from what happened at NJIT and hoped to have an opportunity (in five sets) against Utah State, but it didn't happen," he said. "We did some good things there at the at the end (against Idaho State) that we hadn't done before in previous matches. The girls played well at the end."
In the first set trailing 16-15, Utah Valley scored three straight points on kills by Manwill and Clement and an ISU attack error. ISU rallied to tie the match at 19-19 and from there the match was tied four more times before the Bengals, which trailed 22-23 at one point took it to set point at 24-23.
After a Utah Valley timeout, the Bengals closed out the set with a kill. ISU had 19 kills (.300) in the set to Utah Valley's 10. Broadbent had three kills to lead UVU while Manwill and Clement had two each.
Lanni O'Reilly served two quick points in the second set as UVU led 4-2. The Wolverines upped the lead to three at 10-7 on an ISU service error and back-to-back kills by Nish.
With O'Reilly serving again, the Wolverines went ahead by four at 12-8 before ISU called a time out. ISU eventually tied the score at 13-13, 14-14 and 16-16.
With the score tied 16-16, Nish recorded three straight kills push the Wolverines ahead to the 19-16 advantage.
UVU got to set point at 24-20 on a kill by Chelsey Garfield, two kills by Clement and two ISU attack errors, but the Bengals scored three straight points before a Broadbent kill captured the set for the Wolverines at 25-23.
Nish had seven kills in the set, while Clement had three.
O'Reilly kept up her hot serving in the third set as she served six straight points to increase UVU's lead to nine at 14-5. In the run Clement had two kills and Fa'alogo had one, while ISU committed three attack errors.
Later in the set, Clement had another kill and Fa'alogo had a service ace as the UVU lead went to 10.
Broadbent had four kills in UVU's last six points to win the set 25-13.
Utah Valley didn't lead in the fourth set until it took a 19-18 lead. In taking the lead Manwill and Broadbent had kills, and ISU had three attack errors.
The match was tied as late as 22-22 before ISU scored two of the last three points - two of which came on UVU attack errors - to win the set and force the deciding set.
The Wolverines will travel to Southern Utah on Tuesday for a non-conference match with the T-Birds before returning home Friday for a conference match with Houston Baptist.
