UVU Hosts Houston Baptist in GWC Contest Friday

OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University volleyball team puts its three-match winning streak on the line Friday night when it hosts Houston Baptist in a Great West Conference contest at 7 p.m. a the Shurian Family Activity Center.

The match is UVU's second-to-last home match.

In an event tabbed "Pink With A Purpose" the volleyball team and soccer team, with help from the Second Chance Foundation of Utah and major sponsors Centennial Bank and Super 8-Provo are raising money to benefit nine-year-old Hannah Laursen, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Portions of the ticket sales, as well as fan donations from the soccer and volleyball games on Friday will go to benefit Hannah.

The first 250 fans at UVU's soccer match with North Dakota at 4 p.m. with receive a free T-shirt, courtesy of Super 8-Provo, while the first 450 fans at the volleyball match with Houston Baptist will receive a free T-shirt courtesy of Centennial Bank.

On Oct. 26, J.R. Richards, lead singer of Dishwalla, will be performing a benefit concert in the UVU Grande Ballroom. For more information click HERE.

Currently, the Wolverines (15-7, 5-1) are tied with North Dakota for second place in the GWC volleyball standings. UVU's only conference loss came to NJIT in five sets on Oct.10 in Newark, New Jersey.

In their last three matches the Wolverines have posted wins over Southern Utah, Idaho State and Texas-Pan American, while the Huskies have also won their last three matches, including a 3-0 Great West Conference victory over Chicago State last Saturday.

The Wolverines are 1-0 all-time against the Huskies. The first-ever meeting - a 3-0 UVU win - was Nov. 7, 2008 in Orem

UVU OH Kayli Broadbent, the reigning Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, leads the Wolverines in kills with 325 (4.22 per set), while senior OH Camie Manwill, who became UVU's all-time kills leader last week (1,416), is second on the team with 251.

Manwill, who already holds the school records in kills (1,416), kills per set (3.75), attack attempts (4,090), service attempts (1,529), and points per set (4.28), needs just 74 more points to pass Jessica Endres (1,691) for the school record in that category.

Ligia Clement, Heather Leaverton and Sarah Hazlewood lead the Huskies in kills this season with 195, 193 and 169 kills, respectively.

Following the match with the Huskies, the Wolverines will play the first five road games Tuesday night when they travel to BYU. On Oct. 29 and Oct. 31, the Wolverines play at South Dakota and North Dakota.

UVU returns home for its final home match of the season on Nov. 12 when the Wolverines host NJIT.
