MORAGA, Calif. - The Utah Valley University softball team (3-5) split games on the first day of the St. Mary's Gael Classic Saturday with an 11-3 win against Brown in the early game, and a tight 4-2 loss to St. Mary's in the late game.

Senior Kylee Steadman and junior Jessica Anderson each went deep in the first game and both now have two homeruns on the season. As a team, the Wolverines stole five bases, picked up 23 hits, and only gave up 12 hits between the two games.

"We swung the bats well all day," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "Both pitchers threw well today, and it was probably Jessica Martin's best outing of the year. We ran well on the bases, and overall I was pleased with how we played today."

The Wolverines beat the Bears in five innings to start the day. Senior Magan Niemann went 3-for-four from the plate with two RBI, and leadoff sophomore Meghan Woodworth went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Steadman and Anderson each went 3-for-3 and scored two runs apiece in addition to their homers. UVU's offense produced a total of 16 hits in the five innings.

Freshman Amanda Perez pitched all five innings against Brown and gave up three earned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Her record on the year improved to 3-0 in the circle with the win.

Woodworth picked up two more hits and a run against St. Mary's. Niemann scored the other run for Utah Valley in the game, and freshman catcher Maggie Christianson went 2-for-3 at the plate as well.

Martin struck out four batters in six innings. She gave up two homeruns for three runs, but only gave up seven hits in the game.

The Wolverines are scheduled to play Brown again Sunday as well as Binghamton, although rain is projected in the forecast.
