OREM, Utah - A late comeback in the second game of a doubleheader propels Utah Valley University's softball team to an 11-9 win over Boise State Monday at MSTAR Field. Earlier in the day Boise State (17-10) came-from-behind to beat UVU (10-15) 14-9.

"As disappointed, embarrassed, and humiliated as I was with the first game I was every bit as proud of our team in the second game," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "I challenged them after the first game that they really need to learn how to finish and they really answered the call in the comeback win. They came out and took this game, every one of them, this was all them."

The Wolverines trailed the second game 8-4 with only nine more offensive outs remaining as they entered the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Meghan Woodworth singled and scored a run as junior Cherylyn McGraw drove her home with an infield single putting the score at 8-5 to end the fifth. Boise scored a run in the top of the sixth to make it 9-5.

In the sixth, UVU made Boise State's starter Aubray Zell pay as they finally got to her scoring six runs on five hits in the inning. Junior Amber Sackett walked to leadoff the inning followed by a no doubt two-run homer to deep left-center off of the bat of sophomore Samantha Telarroja. The home run was Telarroja's first career round tripper, that cut the Bronco advantage to two runs.

After two quick outs UVU had a big two out rally as senior Magan Niemann came through with a solid single into left. McGraw followed with a triple in the right field corner that knocked home the run in Niemann. Senior Kylee Steadman hit a ball hard at the Broncos second baseman and she booted it resulting in the tying run scoring in McGraw. With the score all tied at 9 apiece in the bottom of the sixth freshman Amanda Perez hit a huge to right center that scored the go ahead runs as Jessica Anderson and Steadman scored giving UVU the 11-9 lead.

Sackett, who pitched the final 5.2 innings for UVU picked up her first win on the season as she retired BSU in order in the seventh including striking out the final batter of the game Laeha Hill looking.

Game one on the afternoon was pretty much the same storyline but this time it was Boise State who made the big comeback as the Broncos scored 5 runs in the sixth and 9 runs in the seventh to win 14-9. In that game UVU had a lead of 5-0 heading into the sixth and regained 9-5 lead heading into the seventh but lost in the end.

UVU freshman Jessica Martin took the loss in game one as she allowed nine walks and 12 earned runs.

Woodworth, Lauren Augino, Niemann, and McGraw all had multiple hits in game two on the day as McGraw led the way from the plate going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. In game one Augino and McGraw each had two hits.

Utah Valley's next action will be Thursday at the University of Utah, as UVU will play a solo game in Salt Lake City at 4 p.m. The Wolverines will be back home this weekend as they will host North Dakota Friday at 4 p.m. and play two against Idaho State Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
