Game Two Box Score
GREELEY, Colo. - The Utah Valley University softball came-back from a six run deficit in game two of a doubleheader Saturday at Northern Colorado but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines (15-22) dropped the final two games of a weekend series with the Bears (16-22), falling 13-5 in five innings and 9-8.
In the second game of the doubleheader and the final one of the series, UVU battled back in the top of the fifth inning scoring six runs to tie the game at eight apiece. Still with the bases loaded and no body out in the frame the Bears brought in Hillary Van Otterloo on in relief and she was able to retire the top of the lineup in order to escape out the jam. The game remained tied at eight until the last of the seventh when UNC manufactured a run to win.
Northern Colorado began the second game scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
With the score remaining the same Utah Valley brought home two runs in the top of fourth to cut the score to 3-2. Amber Sackett led off the inning with a single through the left side and Kylee Steadman followed up with a single to right where Sackett came home to score on a fielding error on the Bears right fielder. After a Cherylyn McGraw fly out to center field, Jessica Anderson picked up an RBI with a solid single into center.
With the score at 3-2 the Bears responded in the last of the fourth by scoring five runs to take an 8-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth UVU scored six runs to tie the game at eight. Woodworth led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch. Lauren Augino walked and came around to score on a wild pitch. Niemann reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch. Sackett walked and scored on a Steadman single. McGraw and Anderson then both singled to load the bases. Perez then came through with a two-run single through the left side of the infield. Samantha Telarroja followed with another single and then with no outs and the bases loaded Van Otterloo took care of business by retiring Woodworth, Augino and Niemann to end the rally.
Amber Sackett did a nice job on in relief for Utah Valley as she pitched the final two and two-thirds of an inning. With the score still tied at eight in the bottom of the seventh Alex Neeley singled to start off the inning for the Bears. Jessie Schoepflin bunted her over into scoring position with one out. Melissa Ryba then came through with a double off of Sackett to score Neeley as UNC was able to comeback and win both games of the doubleheader.
Sackett suffered the loss for UVU as she only run earned run, but it was the winning run for UNC.
In the first game on the afternoon, UVU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as the leadoff hitter Meghan Woodworth walked and scored on a RBI groundout by Amanda Perez. The Bears bats got hot in the second inning as they managed to score seven runs off of Perez who started in the circle for Utah Valley.
Trailing 10-1 heading into the fifth inning the Wolverine hitters rallied to prolong the game thanks to a grand slam home run from senior Magan Niemann as they scored four runs to cut the deficit in half, 10-5. Northern Colorado came out in the bottom of the fifth and scored three more runs off of Perez to win via the eight-run rule, 13-5. Perez pitched the entire first game and took the loss as she allowed 13 earned runs.
The Bears won the series three games to one and took six-out-of-eight from the Wolverines on the season.
Utah Valley will be back in action for the only games next week, as they will play a doubleheader in Logan at Utah State Tuesday, April 14 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
