OREM, Utah - After being swept by No. 15 USC earlier in the day, the Utah Valley University volleyball team rebounded with a 15-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-22 victory over Idaho State Saturday night to place second in the 2009 Wolverine Invitational.
"This morning was not a great way to start the day, but hats off to the girls for being able to bounce back after a disappointing performance," Utah Valley University volleyball coach Sam Atoa said.
The sluggishness of a the 25-16, 25-20, 25-15 loss to Pacific-10 power and invitational winner USC seemed to carry over to the first set for UVU (5-4) against Idaho State as the Bengals controlled the set in winning 25-15. The Bengals hit at a .609 percentage.
"It was a huge wake-up call for us," Atoa said of the opening-set loss to Idaho State. "I was proud of the girls for being able to settle down and play our game."
In the second set, the Wolverines led 11-8, but outscored the Bengals (4-5) 14-3 to close out the set.
UVU had 20 kills in the set in hitting at .409. Kayli Broadbent had four kills and Jaicee Kuresa had two. Broadbent and Camie Manwill had two services aces each in the set.
The Wolverines took control of match in the third set thanks in large part to the serving of Manwill and Kathleen Stevens. Manwill served the first four points of the set. Later, the Wolverines scored eight straight points and Stevens served seven of them as UVU built a commanding 13-3 lead.
Broadbent had seven kills in the set , Kuresa had three and Manwill and Sarah Clement had two each.
With the fourth set tied at 4-4, the Wolverines scored eight of the next nine points to lead 12-5. The Bengals eventually pulled with two points at 24-22, but Manwill's kill put and end to the set and match.
Broadbent, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 17 kills in the match, while Manwill posted her fifth double-double with 16 digs and 10 kills. Clement had eight kills and two block assists, while Kuresa had six kills and four block assists. Dani Robison tallied five block assists.
Also, Allyce Jones, who was also named to the all-tournament team, had 10 digs and Chelsea Fa'alogo recorded 37 assists.
In the loss to USC, the Wolverines hit at just .131 for the match while USC hit at .329.
Faith Tusieseina had nine kills in the match to lead the Wolverines while Broadbent had six. Jones had 12 digs and Fa'alogo had 22 assists.
The Wolverines are back in action Wednesday when they host No, 12 Oregon at 7 p.m.
