Week 6 NOTES
OREM, Utah - After an much-needed eight-day break, the Utah Valley University volleyball team will play three matches in the next five days beginning with back-to-back home Great West Conference matches with North Dakota and South Dakota, Thursday and Friday.
Both matches begin at 7 p.m. at the Shurian Family Activity Center. The Wolverines (8-5, 1-0) haven't played since beating Southern Utah, 3-0, on Sept. 22.
UVU will then host Boise State on Monday before hitting the road for its first road conference matches of the season.
UVU enters the contest with North Dakota on a three-match winning streak (Boise State, Chicago State and Southern Utah), while North Dakota enters the contest on a five-match winning streak.
The Fighting Sioux (10-5, 2-0) posted conference wins over Houston Baptist and Texas-Pan American and carded non-conference wins over Seattle (twice) and Gonzaga, a team UVU beat in the first match of the season.
On the other hand, South Dakota (4-10, 1-1) enters the contest with Utah Valley having lost six of their last seven matches (not counting their match with University of Sioux Falls Wednesday night).
Boise State opened the season 0-11 which included a 3-1 loss to Utah Valley on Sept. 17. The Broncos beat San Jose State, 3-2, on Sept. 26. They have matches with Fresno State and Utah State before playing the Wolverines on Oct. 5. The match with the Broncos can be see live on UVU-TV.
The Wolverines, who have won nine straight sets, are led by junior OH Kayli Broadbent and senior OH Camie Manwill, who have 186 and 144 kills, respectively. Sophomore MB Sarah Clement has 68.
Sophomore S Chelsea Fa'alogo leads the team with 474 assists, while senior L Allyce Jones leads the team with 223 digs and Manwill has 130.
WOLVERINES NATIONALLY: In matches through Sept. 27, the Wolverines were ranked in the Top 37 in the nation in four categories: aces per set (30th, 1.78), hitting percent¬age (32nd, .259), assists per set (32nd, 12.63), and kills per set (37th, 13.59).
APPROACHING MILESTONE: UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa is one win away from 100 victories in six-plus NCAA Division I seasons with a record of 99-79. In his 10-plus seasons at UVU, he is 237-110.
Under his watch this year, the Wolverines started the year 4-0 for the first-time as four-year program, beat Weber State for the first time in Ogden, as well as beating No. 17 Utah first the first time, which was also UVU's first win over a ranked opponent.
MAKING THEIR MARK: Five players on the UVU roster currently rank in the Top 10 in school history in service aces per set: Kayli Broadbent (2nd, 0.30), Kathleen Ste¬vens (4th, 0.28), Camie Manwill (5th, 0.27), Allyce Jones (8th, 0.19) and Lanni O'Reilly (9th, 0.17).
CAMIE'S CLIMBING: Camie Manwill ranks first or second all-time in eight different categories: kills (2nd, 1,309), kills per set (1st, 3.76), attack attempts (1st, 3,782), service aces (2nd, 94), digs (2nd, 1,119), solo blocks (2nd, 25), points (2nd, 1,493.0), points per set (1st, 4.29).
FIVE-SETTER: Through 13 matches this year, the Wolverines have yet to go to a fifth set. Since becoming a four-year program, the furthest a UVU team has gone in a season before going to a fifth set was in 2004 when they beat UC-Davis, 3-2, in the sixth match of the year.
