EDINBURG, Texas - Utah Valley's volleyball team began its two-match conference road trip this week with a 3-0 sweep over Great West foe Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Thursday evening (25-15, 25-17, 25-17).
With the win, the Wolverines improved to 12-9 and 3-2 in conference, while the Broncs dropped to 5-15 and 2-4.
"We controlled the tempo of the match right from the beginning," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "We took a big lead, which made it difficult for them to comeback. I'm really proud of all of the girls' effort and that we were able to stick to the game plan and execute the way that we planned on."
In the first set, UVU got off to a quick start as they worked a commanding 15-4 lead on a kill from senior Dani Robison. UVU went on to win the first set by a score of 25-15. Junior Chelsey Heaps paced the Wolverines in the set as she led with seven, while Robison and senior Kayli Doxey both finished with five apiece. UVU scored on 20 kills in the opening set to UTPA's 11.
The second set was pretty similar to the first one as the Wolverines worked an early advantage. UVU went ahead 14-6 on a kill from Doxey. The Broncs tried to fight back into it but could only manage to get within four at 17-13 as UVU went on the win the second set 25-17. Doxey led her Wolverine counterparts with six kills in the set, while freshman Brookelyn Campbell helped set her up as she dished out 10 assists.
Utah Valley then put the set away in the third as they jumped out to a 10-0 advantage. The Broncs then scored nine of the next 13 points to get within four but the Wolverines were in the groove and put the set away with a 25-17 win.
As a team UVU outhit UTPA .382 to .183 as the Wolverines scored 43 kills to the Broncs 30. Robison, Doxey and Heaps all finished in double figures in kills on the night as they finished with 13, 13 and 10 respectively. Doxey and Robison both hit at near unheard of percentages as they hit at .684 and .647.
With the win, UVU improved to 15-1 all-time against the Broncs. The two squads will meet up one more time this season when the Wolverines welcome UTPA to Orem for senior night on Nov. 5.
The Wolverines will conclude their Texas road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. MT in Houston, when they take on conference foe Houston Baptist.
"I feel that we are doing some really great things right now," Atoa added. "Our focus is going to be on the same things that it was tonight. We expect to execute very well on Saturday at Houston Baptist too."
