OREM, Utah - Utah Valley's women's volleyball team opened up a three-match home stand with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-15) win over in-state rival Weber State on "Pink for a Purpose" night on Tuesday. The victory was UVU's (10-8) third straight against an in-state opponent.
"We like coming home because a lot of the time it helps us get back on track," said UVU head coach Sam Atoa. "We were able to do that tonight. You never want to take anything for granted especially when it comes to in-state rivals."
The Wolverines looked anxious to get back to their winning ways after dropping their last two matches. They jumped all over the Wildcats (2-16) in the first set, winning a quick 25-14 decision. Junior Chelsey Heaps led UVU with six kills and an ace in an opening set that was never in doubt for the Wolverines.
Weber State battled back in the second set and led for a large portion of it, but UVU was too much for them in the end. The Wolverines fought through seven lead changes and 14 ties to win the set 25-21. Freshman Brookelyn Campbell sparked the UVU attack, contributing 14 assists in the set.
The third and final set proved to be much of the same for the Wolverines. They overwhelmed a young Wildcat team from the beginning and never looked back, placing a 25-15 exclamation point on the match.
Senior Kayli Doxey had a match-high 12 kills and Campbell finished with a double-double of 26 assists and 10 digs. Heaps also notched double figures as she finished with 10 kills and hit at an impressive percentage of .474 for the match. UVU combined for 18 blocks and seven aces as a team.
The Wolverines will play two more matches at home later this week when they host conference foe Chicago State Thursday and crosstown rival BYU for the first time since the 2006 season Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in the Activity Center.
