Feb. 12, 2010

Box Score

ST. GEORGE - Utah Valley opened up the 2010 softball season on a winning note on the first day of the Red Desert Classic with a 10-8 victory over the University of Maine.

UVU junior Kyli Flanary belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh in leading the Wolverines to the season-opening win.

The Wolverines dropped a 7-3 decision to San Jose State later in the day.

"We did a lot of things wrong today, but when it's said and done the kids came out and played hard and had some good swings," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said.

Meghan Woodworth, hitting from the leadoff spot, got the Wolverines on the board first in the four-run second with an two-run single, and Amber Sackett also had an RBI in the inning to go along with an unearned run.

Utah Valley held the lead a 5-3 lead heading into the fifth before Maine plated three runs to lead 6-5. UVU freshman Charlee Cisneros delivered a big two-run double in the sixth to regain the lead for the Wolverines, but they couldn't hold it.

Trailing by one heading in the bottom of the seventh, Flanary belted the two-out, three-run game-winner deep over the centerfield wall.

"It was a no-doubter," Fairbourne said.

Woodworth led the Wolverines offensively with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs in the Game 1 win. Jessica Martin came in relief of starter Heather Bacon and picked up the win. She also came in in relief of starter Flanary in the second game.

In the second game, the Wolverines led 2-0 before the Spartans scored three in the third. The Wolverines tied it with a run in the fourth, but SJSU broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Woodworth and Cisneros had two hits each for the Wolverines in the second game.

For the day, Woodworth went 5-for-7 with four runs scored and two RBIs, while Cisneros went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Flanary had three RBIs in four at-bats.

The Wolverines conclude the Red Desert Classic with two games Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. with Idaho State and then they take on Santa Barbara at 4 p.m.
