VERMILLION, S.D. - Utah Valley fell behind 15-0 in the first seven minutes of its Great West Conference contest with South Dakota Thursday, and they couldn't recover in suffering the 68-39 defeat.
Utah Valley got on the board at the 12:48 mark of the first half on a foul shot by Blake Reynolds, but the Wolverines didn't record their first field goal until the 7:32 mark when Kaycee Mansfield knocked down a three-pointer.
The Wolverines shot just 20 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, and the red-hot Coyotes shot 53.3 percent, including 8-of-15 from the three-point line, in running out to the 41-14 halftime lead.
With the loss the Wolverines drop to 5-21 overall and 1-8 in Great West Conference play, while the Coyotes improve to 11-12 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Utah Valley shot a little better in the second half (32 percent) but they wouldn't get any closer than 24 points.
Julie Smith, Jenna Johnson, and Kayla Burningham scored six points each to lead the Wolverines and Mansfield had five. USD's Amber Hegge led all scorers with 16 points.
For the game, the Wolverines shot 26 percent from the field and USD shot 48.2 percent.
Utah Valley is back in action Saturday at noon (MT) when the Wolverines battle North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.
