UVU Softball Splits with Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD - Shaylyn Varney drove in two runs in the top of the first inning and pitcher Kyli Flanary made them stand in Utah Valley's 4-1 victory over Cal State Bakerfield in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

The Wolverines (3-3) dropped the second game of the twinbill, 11-6.

"I'm happy with how we are coming out like gangbusters in first games, but we need to be a little more hungry," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "We need to find ways not just to split, but sweep people."

Meghan Woodworth walked to open the game and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Charlee Cisneros. After Megan Gardner reached on an error and stole second, Varney drove them in with a single to right.

Flanary (1-1) allowed just one run (and it came in the seventh inning) on six hits in recording the complete-game victory. She struck out five and walked three.

The Wolverines (3-2) added two insurance runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Woodworth and Cisneros.

Cherylyn McGraw and Jessica Anderson had hits in the game.

In the second game, the Wolverines trailed 5-1 after the first inning, and after a lengthy rain delay, they scored five runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Amanda Perez had a two-run double in the inning, and McGraw, Anderson and Samantha Telarroja had RBIs base knocks in the frame.

The Roadrunners, however, scored five runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth en route to the victory.

Cisneros went 2-for-3 in the contest with two RBIs and Perez also had a pair of hits.

The two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon MT.
