BAKERSFIELD - The Utah Valley University softball team closed out its four-game series Sunday at Bakersfield with a pair of losses, 4-3 and 8-0.
Trailing 1-0 in the first game, the Wolverines took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Amber Sackett. The Roadrunners tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning and then took the lead for good with two tallies in the sixth.
"We played great for five innings but we fell apart at the end. The errors cost us big time," UVU assistant softball coach Rachel Hartgrove said. "You can't have back-to-back errors and get something positive from it."
The Wolverines (3-5) led briefly in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Amanda Perez before the Roadrunners scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Wolverines scored their runs on six hits, while the Roadrunners had seven hits and the Wolverines committed four errors.
Freshman Charlee Cisneros had two hits in the game for the Wolverines.
In the sixth, UVU catcher Shaylyn Varney dislocated her thumb on a play at the plate.
In the final game of the series, CSUB's Shawna Traun allowed just two UVU hits - both to Cherylyn McGraw - in six innings in the Roadrunners' shutout.
For the series, Cisneros hit .500 (6-for-12) with an RBI, while Varney hit .333 (2-for-6) and McGraw hit .300 (3-for-10).
The Wolverines are back in action March 5 when they battle Utah State (11 a.m.) and Colorado State (3 p.m.) in the Colorado State Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo.
