LOS ANGELES - Utah Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory over Bucknell on the opening day of the Loyola Marymount Invitational Thursday morning.
The Wolverines (4-10) led 5-3 after three innings before the Bison (3-3) scored a run in each of the last two tie the score at 5-5 to send the game into extra-innings. They took a one-run lead in the top of the inning before the Wolverines won it in the bottom of the eighth.
Playing with the international tie-breaker, UVU's Charlee Cisneros was placed at second to start the inning, and Meghan Woodworth later entered as a pinch-runner.
Megan Gardner reached on a fielder's choice and Woodworth moved to third. After a strikeout, Gardner stole second and Amanda Perez, the Great West Conference Player of the Week, was intentionally walked.
With the bases loaded, Shaylyn Varney singled home a run to tie the game, and then Gardner scored on a wild pitch to win the game.
Kyli Flanary fired the complete-game nine-hitter and struck out eight while walking just one.
Perez finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Amber Sackett and Kisner drove in one run each.
In the second game of the day, the Wolverines dropped a 7-3 decision to North Dakota.
The game was tied 3-3 after 5 1/2 innings, but the Fighting Sioux rattled off four runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to the win.
Perez had two hits and two RBIs for the Wolverines, and Sackett had two hits. Shaylyn Varney drove in UVU's other run.
The Wolverines are back in action Saturday when they meet Loyola Marymount at 9 a.m. and North Dakota at 1 p.m. The games can be folllowed by Clicking here.
