LOS ANGELES - The Utah Valley University softball team scored in every inning but the fifth and tallied a season high in runs in a 13-10 victory over Bucknell in the first game of the Loyola Marymount Invitational Saturday.

The Wolverines pounded out 15 hits in their second win over the Bison at the Invite led by Megan Gardner, who went 3-for-5 and an RBI. Cherylyn McGraw, Amber Sackett, Shaylyn Varney, Jessica Anderson, and Samantha Telarroja had two hits each.

Telarroja paced the Wolverines with three RBIs, while Anderson, with a double and a homer, Sackett, Charlee Cisneros and McGraw drove in two runs each.

The Wolverines dropped a 4-2 decision to Loyola Marymount later in the day.

"The girls played well. We put a lot of runs on the board," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "After we gave up the lead in the first game they stepped up big."

The Wolverines led 5-3 heading in to the bottom of the fifth and the Bison took the lead at 7-5.

Anderson belted a solo homer to lead off the sixth for the Wolverines, and Cisneros and Garnder later delivered RBIs in the inning to take the lead for good at 8-7.

For good measure, Telarroja fueled UVU with a three-run double and McGraw and Cisneros added RBIs in the top of the seventh before the Bison added three in the bottom of the inning.

Heather Bacon improved to 2-1 by allowing five earned runs (seven total) on five hits. She struck out three and walked six.

In the second game of the day, the Lions scored their runs in the first three innings, and the Wolverines managed just two runs in the fifth.

Gardner went 3-for-3, while Sackett went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mandy Tapia threw her best game of the year, despite suffering the loss, by allowing four runs - all earned - on eight hits in the complete game.

"These were the best back-to-back games we've played all year despite the loss," Fairbourne said.

The Wolverines are back in action Friday when they play Houston Baptist at a mid-season Great West Conference Tournament in Dallas. The contests with the Huskies are set for noon and 2 p.m.

UVU will also play South Dakota and North Dakota on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
