DALLAS - The Utah Valley University softball team earned the No. 1 seed for the Great West Conference tournament in mid-May by splitting with the University of North Dakota Sunday.

The Wolverines entered the day on a four-game winning streak with sweeps of Houston Baptist and South Dakota and increased their streak to a season-high five games with a 9-1 five-inning win over the Fighting Sioux. UND rebounded for a 3-1 win in the finale.

"The girls played well all weekend," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "They were the best team here, no doubt."

In the first game of the day Sunday, the Wolverines (10-15) scored in every inning en route to the eight-run win. Meghan Woodworth and Shaylyn Varney drove in two runs each, while Amber Sackett, Cherylyn McGraw and Amanda Perez drove in runs.

Kyli Flanary improved to 5-6 on the season by allowing just on run (in the first inning) on three hits while striking out six and walking just two.

In the second game, the Wolverines were held to just six hits, while the Sioux pounded out 12. Varney led the team with two hits, while Jessica Anderson drove in UVU's only run.

Varney and Woodworth both hit .500 in six games. Varney belted two homers and drove in seven runs. Megan Gardner drove in six, while Woodworth, Cherylyn, McGraw, who also belted two homers, and Anderson drove in four runs each.

As a team, the Wolverines hit .306.

Flanary went 3-0 with a stingy 0.93 ERA with 10 strikeouts and just four walks in 15 innings. Jessica Martin and Heather Bacon also picked up wins.

The Wolverines open their home slate Tuesday when they host Utah State for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Orem.
