UVU Takes Doubleheader from Weber State

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley improved to 15-16 overall and 3-1 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference action Saturday afternoon with 14-1 and 10-2 victories over Weber State.

In the opener, Charlee Cisneros, Amber Sackett, Shaylyn Varney and Cherylyn McGraw drove in two runs each as the Wolverines ended the contest after five frames.

Kyli Flanary picked up her seventh win of the season by allowing just one run on two hits. She struck out two and walked just one. Weber State's only run came in the second inning.

UVU, which played as the visiting team, led 3-1 after three innings, but posted seven runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to close out the contest.

In the decisive frame, Perez belted a solo homer, Cisneros and Sackett drew bases-loaded walks, Varney doubled home a pair and McGraw doubled in another run. In the inning, the Wolverines had four hits while taking advantage of two Weber State errors.

In the fifth, the Wolverines scored four runs - two on RBIs by Meghan Woodworth and Cisneros - on three hits and two Weber errors.

In Game 2, Mandy Tapia picked up her first collegiate win. She scatted 10 hits and allowed just two runs while striking out five.

Sackett belted two homers in the game and Varney went deep as well. Jessica Anderson, who went 4-for-4 with three RBIs had a pair of doubles. Varney drove in two for the Wolverines.

In the four-game series with the Wildcats, Sackett hit .625 with a double, two homers and a team-high seven RBIs. Varney hits .615 with a double, homer and four RBIs, while McGraw and Samantha Telarroja hit .500. McGraw had three doubles and five RBIs and Telarroja had two homers and five RBIs.

"The girls played great in every aspect of the game (Saturday)," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "There wasn't going to be a repeat of Friday (8-6 loss to the Wildcats)."

UVU has won five of its last six games and 11 of its last 14.

The Wolverines are back in action Monday when the host the College of Idaho in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. They play again Tuesday when they host BYU in a single game beginning at 5 p.m.
