OREM, Utah - Utah Valley moved into a first-place tie in the Pacific Coast Softball standings with a 3-2 victory over Portland State in the first game of a doubleheader Friday, but fell a game back with a 7-2 loss in the night cap.
The Wolverines (18-18) took advantage of three Viking errors in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up what proved to be the winning run on an RBI ground out by Mandy Tapia.
Meghan Woodworth, who went 3-for-3, doubled home UVU's first two runs in the second inning. The Vikings chipped away at the lead with a run in the third and another in the top of the sixth to tie the score.
Jessica Anderson, who reached on a fielding error to open the sixth, scored the winning run.
Kyli Flanary improved to 8-7 by allowing just two runs (one earned) in firing the complete game. She struck out two and walked two.
In Game 2, the Vikings (15-22) scored four runs in the first two innings off UVU starter Heather Bacon, who fell to 4-2, and offensively the Wolverines couldn't get anything going.
Megan Gardner singled home a run in the third and Amanda Perez belted her eighth homer of the year in the fourth.
Portland State starter Nicole Latham held the Wolverines to just five hits while striking out five.
Gardner finished with two hits in the game.
The two teams conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
