SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Valley out hit the University of Utah by one Monday afternoon, but the Wolverines came up on the short end of a 6-2 decision.
Cherylyn McGraw led the Wolverines with two hits and drove in UVU's only runs in the game in the top of the first inning. In the frame, the Wolverines tallied four hits, but from there on out, Utah's Ashley Smuda, who earned the win, held UVU to just four hits the remainder of the way.
With the loss, the Wolverines (19-20) are now 3-14 all-time against the University of Utah.
After UVU took the 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Utes scored at least one run in each of the next five innings to pull away.
UVU's Heather Bacon started and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in three innings in taking the loss. Kyli Flanary pitched two innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Mandy Tapia closed out the game with a hitless sixth inning.
The Wolverines are back in action Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they travel to Logan for a doubleheader with Utah State University.
