OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University moved into sole possession of second place in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference standings Friday with 7-6 and 12-4 victories over Seattle University, which entered the day in a first-place tie with Portland State.
The Wolverines, who snapped a four-game losing streak with the two wins, pounded out 25 hits in the game, while scoring 19 runs.
"We need to pick up where we left (Saturday) and hit the ball with a lot of confidence," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said.
The two teams conclude the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Kyli Flanary picked up the win and had three hits in the Wolverines' victory over the Redhawks in Game 1. She helped her own cause with three RBIs - including a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to increase the UVU lead to 7-4.
Those runs proved huge after Seattle scored two runs in the top of the seventh.
With the win, Flanary improved to 10-8 despite allowing six runs on 11 hits.
Amber Sackett went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Shaylyn Varney also had two hits and an RBI. Jessica Anderson also drove in a run.
UVU erased the Redhawks' early 2-0 lead with two runs in the second and two more in the third.
Seattle tied the score at 4-4 with two runs in the fifth before Sackett's RBI in the bottom of the frame gave the Wolverines the lead for good.
In Game 2, the Redhawks led 3-1 after the first frame, but the Wolverines answered with four runs in the bottom of the second.
Three of UVU's four runs in the inning were driven in by Samantha Telarroja, Megan Gardner and Amanda Perez.
The Wolverines led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth before ending the game with the mercy rule by scoring six runs on seven hits and two Seattle errors. Anderson had two hits in the inning, including a two-run double, and Gardner also had two hits in the inning, including the RBI single up the middle to end the game.
McGraw, Anderson, Perez, Gardner and Meghan Woodworth all had hits in the inning.
Jessica improved to 5-2 with the victory. She allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits, while Heather Bacon picked up her first save of the season by firing a scoreless fifth.
Gardner finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Perez, McGraw and Anderson also had two hits in the game. Behind Gardner's three RBIs, Anderson, Perez and Telarroja drove in two apiece.
