OREM, Utah - One day after wrapping out 25 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Seattle University, Utah Valley University managed just 13 hits in 11-1 and 6-5 losses to the Redhawks in Pacific Coast Softball Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Wolverines (21-24, 7-5) fall back into third place in league play.
"In Game 1 they hit the ball better than we did," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said, "and in Game 2 the pitching was the difference, although I was pleased with (Mandy) Tapia's relief performance."
Kyli Flanary, who beat the Redhawks on Friday, allowed eight runs on 10 hits in suffering the loss. She didn't get much help offensively with Tapia, Shaylyn Varney and Jessica Anderson getting the only hits for UVU.
Tapia twirled 4.1 innings and didn't allow a run on just two hits.
Varney's hit was a homer to account for UVU's only run.
Seattle, playing as the home team in both games, scored eight runs in the first three innings, and then scored three more in the sixth in the 10-run win.
In Game 2, the Wolverines trailed 6-1 after three complete, but managed four runs in the fourth. Varney led of the inning with a homer. With two runners on Julia Santiago, who stepped up for Meghan Woodworth who injured herself earlier in the game, singled up the middle to drive in Cherylyn McGraw, but Jordahn Denny, who was running for Amanda Perez who walked, and Santiago scored on the play thanks to two Seattle throwing errors.
The Wolverines, however, couldn't push across a run in the final three innings. UVU outhit the Redhawks 10-7 in the contest.
Varney and McGraw each had two hits for the Wolverines.
UVU is back in action next Saturday and Sunday when the Wolverines open a four-game conference series with at Idaho State. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.
