POCATELLO, Idaho - Utah Valley scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning in the first game of a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Saturday at Idaho State and then held on for the 8-7 victory over the Bengals, and then pounded out 10 hits in a 11-1 win to complete the sweep.
"The girls did a great job coming back in the first game and finding a way to win. It was a total team effort," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "We rode the momentum into the second game."
With the wins, the Wolverines improve to 23-24 overall and 9-5 in PCSC play.
In Game 1, Cherylyn McGraw, who went 3-for-5 in the game, tripled in the 10th to score Amber Perez, who was played on second by the international tiebreaker rule. Shaylyn Varney, who also went 3-for-5 drove in McGraw with a single, and Meghan Woodworth, who also went 3-for-5, drove in Varney.
McGraw, Varney and Woodworth all drove in two runs each for the Wolverines (22=24, 8-5).
The Bengals got two runs off UVU reliever Jessica Martin in the bottom of the 10th before she gave way to Heather Bacon with a runner on second and one out. Bacon got the next two Bengals to ground out to earn her second save of the year.
Martin, who threw 3.1 innings in relief of starter Kyli Flanary, earned the win to improve to 6-2.
The Wolverines trailed by as many as four runs in the game before scoring a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to tie the score at 5-5. It stayed that way until UVU plated three runs in the top of the 10th.
Perez finished with two hits and an RBI, and Amber Sackett had one hit and one RBI.
In Game 2, Sackett went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and Woodworth and Perez drove in two each in the 10-run victory. Jessica Anderson belted a homer for her lone RBI of the game, and Megan Gardner drove in a run.
The Wolverines led 5-1 heading in the top of the fourth inning and broke the game open with five runs in the frame. Woodworth drove in two runs in the inning Sackett drove in one, and then Perez drove in two with a double to center.
Bacon picked up the win by allowing just one run on four hits. She struck out three and didn't walk an ISU batter.
The two teams will conclude the series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
