OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University softball team opened up Pacific Coast Softball Conference action Friday with a split with the Weber State Wildcats.
Samantha Telarroja belted a grand slam in UVU's eight-run first inning in leading the Wolverines to the 10-1 victory, while in Game 2 the Wildcats hit a three-run homer in the fifth to break open a 4-4 tie before winning 8-6.
After the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Game 1, the Wolverines put the game out of reach with eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame.
Amber Sackett had an RBI ground out, Jessica Anderson delivered an RBI base knock and two more UVU runs scored on an WSU error before Telarroja's towering blast. It was her first homer of the season.
Heather Bacon started both contests and allowed one run on five hits (one was a homer in the first inning) for the Game 1 win, and then she allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits in 1.1 inning, but she didn't figure in the decision. Jessica Martin took the loss to fall to 3-1.
In Game 2, the Wolverines began working their way back from the early four-run deficit with a two-run homer by Amanda Perez in the second to cut the Wildcat lead in half.
UVU tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Cherylyn McGraw before the Wildcats took the lead for good on a three-run homer in the top of the fifth.
Telarroja belted her second homer of the day to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, but the Wildcats added another in the top of the six to lead 8-6.
The UVU defense committed five errors in the game, and four were in the first two innings in the two-run setback.
For the day, Shaylyn Varney went 5-for-6, while Telarroja went 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs. McGraw finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
With the split the Wolverines are now 13-16 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The two teams conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
