Box Score
DALLAS - Utah Valley University, the No. 1 seed, opened the Great West Conference Tournament Sunday with a 4-2 upset loss to No. 4 seed North Dakota.
With the loss, the Wolverines, who had just six hits in the game, fall into the loser's bracket and will face the loser of South Dakota/Houston Baptist at 3 p.m. (CDT) in a loser-out contest.
"We didn't play poorly, we just didn't do enough to win," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "UND beat us. They came up with what they needed to do to win."
UVU reliever Mandy Tapia, who entered the game three batters into the game after starter Kyli Flanary was hit in the chin by a comebacker, gave up a two-run homer in the top of the first.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when Amanda Perez belted her single-season school record 12th homer of the year to tie the score at 2-2.
The Fighting Sioux (14-35) picked up the game-winner in the top of the sixth with a homer and then added an insurance run in the seventh with another solo homer.
All of the runs in the game scored via a homer.
Utah Valley left three runners on base in the game, and two were stranded in the bottom of the seventh.
