OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University wrestling team will begin its 2010-11 dual season at home Friday with a Western Wrestling Conference showdown against conference rival Northern Colorado. The first match is slated for 7 p.m.
On Saturday the Wolverines will then host the fourth annual UVU Open. The open will be held in the The Activity Center with action beginning at 9 a.m.
UVU will provide live video and live results for Friday night's dual with Northern Colorado on WolverineGreen.com. Mike Clapier call the action.
The dual will be the Wolverines first of the 2010-11 season, while the visiting Bears will come to town with a 0-2 record. Last year UVU finished with an overall record of 10-3 and second in the WWC at 4-1.
The matchup will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two schools with UNC leading the series 6-4. UVU has however won the last two meetings which includes a 25-10 win in the last meeting in Greeley, Colo., last season.
The Wolverines are led on the season once again by seniors Benjamin Kjar (125-pounds) and Flint Ray (133-pounds). Kjar is the reigning WWC Wrestler of the Week and is ranked 12th by InterMat and holds a 14-4 record, while Ray is 12-1 and ranked 14th. The Bears are led by All-American Justin Gaethje (149-pounds) who is 15-2 this year and ranked No. 13.
On Saturday, wrestlers from Boise State, Wyoming, Northern Colorado, Arizona State, Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield, to name a few, will be vying for titles against grapplers from the host Wolverines.
The wrestling will begin at approximately 9 a.m. on four different mats and will last throughout the day. The finals will take place on the two main mats and will begin at approximately 6 p.m. Updated results will be added on WolverineGreen.com throughout the day and final brackets will be posted as soon as they become available.
Following this weekends action, UVU will hit the road and travel to Arlington, Texas to take part in the Lone Star Duals. At the duals, the Wolverines will go head-to-head with No. 16 Nebraska, The Citadel and Appalachian State.
