UVU's Match Notes
OREM, Utah -- After nine consecutive matches away from home the UVU women's volleyball returns to Orem to host two fellow Great West foes this week in Chicago State and NJIT and the Mountain West's Boise State early next week.
On the heels of a big road victory over the two-time defending conference champion North Dakota Fighting Sioux to begin GWC play last weekend UVU will welcome Chicago State Thursday at 7 p.m., NJIT Saturday at 1 p.m. and the BSU Broncos Monday at 7 p.m. UVU has dominated the all-time series against all three foes as it has a combined 20-3 record versus the trio of opponents.
All three matches will feature live stats and live video that can be found at WolverineGreen.com. The Boise State match will also be televised locally on UVU-TV.
The Wolverines are 11-6 overall on the season and 1-0 in GWC play. UVU jumped 18 spots on the RichKern.com Regional Rankings (RKPI) after defeating UND last weekend as it is currently ranked 79th.
Against the Fighting Sioux UVU was led by Chelsey Heaps and Jaicee Kuresa offensively as each tallied 11 kills apiece and Heaps added a double-double with 17 digs. Sarah Clement also had a big match as she earned her second conference player of the week award of the year with a match-high seven block assists.
As a team UVU is currently ranked 13th in the nation in aces per set with a 1.77 average and 27th in blocks per set (2.60).
About Chicago State
The Cougars snapped their 94-match losing streak that dated back to the 2007 season by defeating Judson earlier this year. CSU will come to town with a 1-17 overall record and an 0-2 start to conference play. In those two conference losses however Chicago State took Texas-Pan American to five sets and Houston Baptist to four at home last week. CSU is led offensively by Sydney Van Munster and her 126 kills and 2.07 kill per set average.
About NJIT
The Highlanders enter the week with a 6-11 overall clip and a 1-1 conference record but will make a stop on their way to Utah and play at North Dakota on Thursday. NJIT picked up a victory over UTPA at home last weekend but fell to HBU. Janet Snell leads the Highlanders with 216 kills and leads the GWC with a 3.38 kill per set average.
About Boise State
The Boise State Broncos have made the jump from the WAC to the Mountain West this year and have a 10-8 overall record and are off to a 1-3 start in conference play. The Broncos fell to Seattle U. on Tuesday and will play a conference match at Air Force on Saturday before heading to UVU for the non-conference affair. BSU is led offensively by Liz Harden and her 181 kills and her 2.78 kill per set average.
Next up for the Wolverines
The Wolverines will once again hit the road next week for two conference contests in the Lone Star State. On Oct. 13 UVU will play at Texas-Pan American and on Oct. 15 the Wolverines will take on Houston Baptist.
Promotions
Thursday against Chicago State will be High School Night as well as Rachel Anderson's Hometown Hero Night . All high school students, faculty and staff with their high school ID will receive $1 admission. Also anyone from Anderson's hometown of Lindon, Utah will get into the match for free and posters of Anderson will also be handed out and she will sign autographs after the match.
Saturday afternoon versus NJIT will be Chelsey Heaps' Hometown Hero Day. Anyone from her hometown of Morgan, Utah will receive free admission to the match. Fans will also receive posters of Heaps and she will sign autographs afterwards.
Monday night against Boise State will be the Pink Game to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Anyone wearing pink to the match will get in for just $1. Monday will also be FHE Night and regular group pricing will apply.
