LUBBOCK, Texas - Amanda Perez drove home four runs and Josi Summers pitched the distance Saturday morning against Bryant at the Texas Tech Invitational as Utah Valley picked up its first victory of the season, 7-6.
Perez, a day removed for breaking the school record with eight runs batted in in a single game, finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and those four more RBIs.
"First of all, give the girls credit because they found a way to close," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "Credit is also due to Josi (Summers). Six runs is not indicative of how well she threw. She was in control of that entire game. Amanda Perez is also on fire offensively in this tournament."
UVU (1-5) continued to shine offensively in the first inning on the year as they scored two times in the frame to go up 2-0. Perez plated Meghan Yocom for the first run and Mandy Tapia scored the second on Deianna Russell's RBI groundout.
Bryant (1-2) then answered in the top of the second by putting a five spot on the board to go up 5-2. The Wolverine comeback was then on as UVU scored a solo run in the third to cut the score to 5-3.
UVU then had its big inning in the fourth, as it sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs to go ahead 7-5. Korryn Coates, Yocom and Tapia all reached base to load the bases. Amanda Robinson then stepped up and singled home Coates for the first run. Perez then followed with her second double of the game to unload the bases and give the Wolverines the lead.
The Wolverines held their 7-5 lead into the sixth but the Bulldogs countered with a run in the top of the frame to cut the deficit to 7-6.
With the game still 7-6 in the seventh, UVU hurler Josi Summers retired the first two batters of the inning. Bryant then made things interesting as the next two hitters reached base. With the go ahead runner on second base Summers drew a groundout to end the game.
Summers pitched the distance in the game for her first victory of her collegiate career. She allowed just four earned runs and struck out four in the win.
Besides Perez's multiple hit game, Tapia too finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Yocom and Robinson also scored two runs apiece in the win.
The Wolverines will now play No. 21 Texas Tech today at 2 p.m. MT.
Utah Valley will conclude play at the Texas Tech Invitational Sunday at 11 a.m. MT when the Wolverines take on the Red Raiders for the third time of the weekend.
