LUBBOCK, Texas - Utah Valley found itself down just three runs late in the ballgame against No. 21 Texas Tech Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Texas Tech Invitational but a late rally gave the Red Raiders (11-0) a 14-5 win over the Wolverines (1-7).
"The girls did a good job," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "I know we got run ruled in the end but we were right there. I think we are a far better team today then we were when we came. We're going to beat some teams."
The undefeated Red Raiders got off to a quick start in the game as they took an 8-0 lead after the first two innings. UVU countered by scoring five runs in the top of the third inning.
Maggie Christianson, Lyndi Prestgard and Korryn Coates started off the third inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases for UVU. Meghan Yocom then plated the Wolverines first run as she singled up the middle to score pinch runner Sydney Miles. Two batters later Amanda Robinson stepped up with the bases still full and delivered the big hit as she hammered a grand slam to left field to unload the bases.
In the circle Kyli Flanary, who replaced starter Josi Summers in the second inning, did a good job in the middle of the game as she didn't allow Texas Tech to score in the third, fourth or fifth.
With UVU still down just three in the top of the sixth inning at 8-5, the Wolverines managed to load the bases with two outs. Charlee Cisneros then stepped up to pinch hit. Cisneros hit a chopper to short that ended up hitting Coates who was running from second to third for the third out.
The offensive rally was the last the Wolverines would have as TTU put the game away in the last of sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Red Raiders loaded the bases looking to add a couple insurance runs. Tech did more than that as it added one on a bloop single to left and two more on a double to left center to take an 11-5 lead. TTU's Mikey Kenney then ended the game with a 3-run homer to left.
Robinson finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and four RBI to lead UVU offensively, while Prestgard and Coates both had multiple hit days as they each finished 2-for-3.
UVU will next travel to Davis, Calif., to play a three-game set at UC Davis March 5-6. The Wolverines will then play their first game of the season in the state of Utah on March 11, when they play at the University of Utah.
