LOS ANGELES -- The Utah Valley softball team opened the Loyola Marymount Invitational Thursday with an 11-7 loss to Bethune-Cookman and an 8-2 loss to North Dakota.
The Wolverines, who tallied seven hits in the loss to North Dakota, led 2-0 in the third, but they allowed eight unanswered runs in suffering the loss. Mairaea Tanielu led the Wolverines with two hits and two RBIs.
In the loss to Bethune-Cookman, the Wolverines led 2-1 after two innings, thanks to a two-run homer by Samantha Telarroja.
UVU trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth before Amanda Perez had a two-run double and Deianna Russell had a two-run single to give the Wolverines a 7-6 lead.
BCU, however, tagged the Wolverines for five runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Meghan Yocom, Tanielu and Korryn Coates led the Wolverines with two hits each.
"We've got to win games when we put that many runs on the board," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said.
The Wolverines are back in action Friday against Canisius (2 p.m. MT) and Loyola Marymount (4 p.m. MT).
