PORTLAND, Ore. - Josi Summers' arm and Amanda Robinson's bat propelled Utah Valley to a 2-0 win over Portland State on Sunday as the Wolverines (10-19, 3-1) won three out of four on the road over last year's PCSC Mountain Division Champions to open conference play. Earlier in the day the Vikings (13-15, 1-3) defeated UVU 10-0 in six innings to earn the doubleheader split.
Summers shut PSU out in the second game as the freshman starter held the Vikings to just four hits while striking out five in the win.
"Josi carried us and Robinson and Yocom got it done for us offensively," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "It was a big win that gave us the series advantage over Portland State. What a big weekend for us and for the program."
Robinson's bat broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as she homered to left to put the Wolverines on top 1-0.
With the score still 1-0 in the fifth, Robinson struck again as she drove home her second run of the day to put UVU up 2-0. Robinson's single to center plated Meghan Yocom who had previously singled in the frame.
That was all the offense that Summers and the Wolverines would need in the game as she cruised to the 2-0 win. The Vikings tried to make things interesting in the seventh by getting the leadoff hitter Lacey Holm on by a single to start the inning but Summers battled right back and retired the next three hitters to give her squad the series.
PSU's Anna Bertrand took the loss in the game as she allowed the two runs on just four hits. Besides Robinson's two hits, Yocom and Mandy Tapia each singled in the game for UVU.
In the first game of the afternoon PSU's Nicole Latham held UVU to just two hits as she shutout the Wolverines 10-0.
The Vikings held just a 1-0 lead until the fourth when they scored three more off of UVU's starter Kyli Flanary to take a 4-0 advantage.
The score remained the same until the sixth when PSU took advantage of a couple Wolverine errors to score six unearned runs in thanks to two long balls from Karmen Holladay and Kayla Norrie to seal the win.
Latham held UVU to just four base runners in the game. Tapia reached via an error in the first, the Wolverines then had their biggest offensive threat of the game in the second as Mairaea Tanielu singled and Maggie Christianson walked. Deianna Russell then recorded UVU's second hit of the game with a single in the fourth.
After taking three of four from PSU, UVU will now look ahead to next weekend's four-game conference series at Seattle University. The Wolverines and Redhawks will play a pair of doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday.
"The key now is to find a way for this to carry over to our next 16 league games and making it stand until the end," Fairbourne added.
