SPANISH FORK, Utah - Amanda Robinson and Deianna Russell helped Utah Valley to a 6-2 win in game one of a PCSC doubleheader against Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon at the Spanish Fork Sports Complex as they combined to go a perfect 7-for-7 with five RBI in the game. The Bears (13-31, 9-3 PCSC) evened the doubleheader and the series by taking game two from the Wolverines (14-24, 7-5 PCSC) by a score of 10-2 in five innings.
Robinson and Russell both went yard in the first game as Amanda hit a first inning two-run shot to left center to give UVU an early 2-0 lead and Deianna added a fifth inning three-run insurance blast to give pitcher Josi Summers all the runs she would need for the win.
Summers improved her conference record to a perfect 6-0 as she allowed just one earned run and struck out five in the complete game performance. Summers later took her first loss of the PCSC season in game number two as she allowed three earned in two plus innings of work.
"A lot of people stepped up in the absence of Meghan Yocom." UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "I felt like we were good enough to win three games this weekend but I'm sure they (Northern Colorado) feel the same way."
"Tanielu, Tapia and Cisneros had great weekend's for us and Robinson and Russell were unbelievable. Josi also threw very well for us again."
In the first game of the day UVU maintained its 2-0 advantage until the fifth when it put four insurance runs on the board to take a 6-0 lead. Besides Russell's three run homer in the frame, Samantha Telarroja doubled and later scored on an RBI from Mairaea Tanielu.
Northern Colorado scored its first run of the game in the last of the fifth when Melanie Buol connected off of Summers for a solo home run. The Bears later added another run in the seventh but it was too late as Summers and the Wolverines held on for the 6-2 victory.
The second game was a different story however as the Bears struck first with a run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Tanielu's bat tied the score in the top of the third as the leadoff hitter led off the frame with a solo shot to deep left. The home run was Tanielu's first collegiate round tripper.
UNC then got a rally going off of Summers in the third and continued it off of Kyli Flanary who came on in relief of Summers in the frame. When all was said and done the Bears scored three runs in the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth Russell answered with her second home run of the day, this time a solo version down the leftfield line to cut the score to 4-2. But that was the last run the Wolverines could muster as UNC's Jamie Juelfs and Megan Wilkinson combined to shutdown UVU's offense the rest of the way.
UNC's Kelli Henderson and Megan Hamilton later added two insurance homers in the late innings for the Bears. Hamilton's three run blast to center in the fifth ended the game via the eight-run rule.
UNC's Juelfs went 3.2 innings and was credited with the win while Megan Wilkinson pitched an inning and a third of one-hit ball.
In the second game Russell led UVU again by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Charlee Cisneros also posted two hits as she finished 2-for-3 in the game.
Hamilton led UNC as she went a perfect 3-for-3 in the game with 5 RBI and three runs scored.
"Now we're going to need some help for our postseason chances as they (UNC) maintained their two game divisional lead on us," Fairbourne added. "Regardless of that we need to go out and find ways to sweep teams the rest of the way."
UVU will now hit the road next weekend and travel up to Ogden for a four-game conference series at Weber State. The games will take place at Wildcat Softball Field on April 29 and 30.
As a note this weekend's series versus UNC was moved from UVU's Wolverine Field to the Spanish Fork Sports Complex due to ongoing renovations to Wolverine Field. UVU's final five home games of the season against BYU (May 3) and Idaho State (May 6-7) will be played at Wolverine Field.
