OGDEN, Utah - Utah Valley improved to 9-5 in PCSC play with a doubleheader sweep of in-state rival Weber State at Wildcat Softball Field on Friday. In the first game the Wolverines (16-24) came back from a 5-0 deficit to hand the Wildcats (12-32, 3-11) an 8-7 loss. UVU then took an early lead in the nightcap and held on to win the second game 10-6.
"We found different ways to get the job done today," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "For nearly the first time all year we managed to come-from-behind and outscore our opponent as everybody in the lineup produced."
Trailing 5-0 in the early stages of game number one UVU managed to tie the game in the fifth by scoring five runs of its own.
Korryn Coates started the scoring with an RBI single to left and Mairaea Tanielu immediately followed with an RBI hit of her own to center. A couple of batters later Deianna Russell drove home two more runs in the frame with a single to left field.
The Wolverines then added three more runs in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Amanda Robinson singled home two of the runners on a hit to left and Amanda Perez scored the other on a fielder's choice.
Weber State threatened in the last of the sixth by scoring two runs to cut the score to 8-7 but UVU pitcher Josi Summers did what she needed to do to hold on to the lead and help her team pick up the win.
Summers pitched the entire game and allowed just three earned runs to score off of her.
Offensively Mandy Tapia led UVU with a 3-for-4 game while Tanielu added a 2-for-3 performance.
In the second game it was a different story, as UVU put up a seven spot in the first inning to take an early 7-0 lead. Weber State then quickly countered by scoring a run in the first and five more in the second to cut the deficit to 7-6.
UVU added two more runs in the third and another insurance run in the sixth take a 10-6 advantage. After allowing six runs in the first two innings Wolverine starter Kyli Flanary held WSU scoreless the rest of the way.
"After giving up a few runs in the first couple innings Flanary settled down and put up zeros the rest of the way," Fairbourne added. "She was huge for us and so was Coates and Tapia offensively."
In the seven-run first inning for UVU, Perez and Russell each had RBI singles to start the scoring and Flanary finished it off by blasting a grand slam home run to give herself and her team an early 7-0 advantage.
After the Wildcats struck back with six runs over the next two innings, UVU's Coates had a two RBI single in the third to put the Wolverines up 9-6.
The Wolverines then added their final run of the game in the sixth on another RBI hit from Russell.
Besides hitting the first-inning grand slam Flanary went the distance in the circle for the win. She pitched the final five innings of scoreless ball and added six strikeouts.
Samantha Telarroja and Coates each went 3-for-4 from the plate in the game to lead UVU. Charlee Cisneros and Russell each finished with multiple hits as they added two apiece in the game.
For the day Tapia and Coates each combined to 4-for-8 for the day. Russell and Flanary led the way in the RBI category as they each tallied four apiece.
The Wolverines and Wildcats will conclude the series with two more games Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
"Weber State is a dangerous team and they can hit the ball," Fairbourne added.
"We just need to find a way to take game one Saturday and then go from there."
