OREM, Utah -- Fresh off of wins over Cal Poly and Santa Clara at home on Saturday, the Utah Valley women's volleyball team will conclude its nine-match homestand by welcoming Syracuse University and BYU-Hawai'i on Monday and Tuesday.
The Wolverines (4-2) will play the Big East's Syracuse Monday at 1 p.m. and BYU-Hawai'i Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Labor Day matinee with the Orange will be televised locally on UVU-TV with Kevin Kassel and Steve Vail on the call. Live video will be streamed online for both matches at UVU.edu/UVUTV and live stats will also be available at WolverineGreen.com.
UVU started the La Quinta Inn and Suites Invitational last weekend with a 3-0 loss to No. 24 Michigan but in the third set of that match it took the Big 10 Wolverines extra points to put UVU away. The Wolverines carried their momentum over to Saturday where they defeated Cal Poly 3-2 and Santa Clara 3-1.
UVU's Brookelyn Campbell and Jaicee Kuresa were named to the All-Tournament team after they put up big numbers during the invitational. Campbell finished with an even 100 assists for the weekend while Kuresa had 29 kills and hit .353.
The reigning Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sarah Clement also had a big weekend for UVU as she put up nine blocks against Santa Clara and totaled 19 for the weekend. Lindsay Barker also played well by picking up 30 kills for the weekend which included a career-high 15 against Cal Poly.
About Syracuse
Syracuse will play its fourth match in the state of Utah Monday against UVU after it went 2-1 at Utah State's tournament this past weekend. There the Orange defeated Idaho State and Texas State but fell to the Aggies. Syracuse is 5-1 on the year and was selected to finish ninth out of 15 teams in the Big East. The Orange are led offensively by preseason All-Big East selection Noemie Lefebvre and her team-high 83 kills and 3.95 kill per set average.
About BYU-Hawai'i
BYU-Hawai'i will play UVU Tuesday for the first time since the 2008 season in Hawai'i. The Div. II Seasiders currently are currently 3-0 this year and are coming off of a big win at Weber State on Saturday. BYU-Hawai'i also has wins over Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks this season. The Seasiders are led this year by Shih Ting Chen and her team-high 52 kills and 4.33 kill per set average. The all-time series between the two is currently tied at 1-1.
Next up for the Wolverines
UVU will hit the road for the first time in the 2011 season when it plays at the Air Force Invitational Sept. 9-10. There the Wolverines will face Air Force, Northern Arizona and South Carolina Upstate.
