OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University wrestling team held on to win its third straight dual and fifth consecutive over a Pac-12 team Friday night as it defeated Stanford 18-15 at UVU's PE Building.

Bonus points were the difference in the contest as the Wolverines (4-2, 1-1 Western Wrestling Conference) and Cardinal (5-13, 1-2 Pac-12) each won five bouts apiece but UVU took three of its five by major decision.

"We've got some work to do but Stanford's a well-coached team and this is a good win for us," said UVU head coach Greg Williams. "Anytime you can beat a team from the Pac-12 it's a good thing but I feel like we took a step back tonight. I saw some weaknesses in some of our guys that we'll take back to the room and work on to make us better."

After dropping the opening contest, 125 pounds, sophomore Chasen Tolbert (133 pounds) gave the Wolverines the lead with an 8-0 major decision over Stanford's Alex Manley. Tolbert controlled the bout from start to finish as he racked up 5:13 of riding time to give UVU a 4-3 advantage after two matches, a lead that the Wolverines would not relinquish the rest of the way.

The winning ways continued from there for Utah Valley as it won the next two matches to jump out to an 11-3 lead. During the spurt, junior Avery Garner (141) defeated Josh Lauderdale 7-2 and senior Josh Wilson (149) followed it up with a 10-2 major decision over Timmy Boone.

The Cardinal answered back with consecutive wins at 157 and 165 pounds to cut the team score to 11-9. Riding time was the difference at 157-pounds, as Stanford's Kyle Meyer took the bout 2-1 over UVU redshirt freshman Chase Cuthbertson. Junior Abner Cook then fell behind 4-0 for the Wolverines in the 165-pound match but cut the score in half with a late takedown in the second period. Stanford's Bret Baumbach held his lead down the stretch however as he took the contest, 5-2

Junior Monte Schmalhaus (174) and redshirt freshman Derek Thomas (184) won the next two bouts for Utah Valley as the Wolverines took an 18-9 advantage. Both Schmalhaus and Thomas controlled their bouts from start-to-finish as they won 8-0 and 8-1 respectively.

Michael Sojka and Dan Scherer eked out the final two matches for the Cardinal as Sojka defeated sophomore David Prieto (197) 3-2 in overtime and Scherer pulled out a one-point decision by the same score over sophomore Adam Fager (heavyweight) but UVU prevailed, 18-15.

The Wolverines will now hit the road for the first time in a month to take on Western Wrestling Conference foes South Dakota State and North Dakota State on Feb. 6 and Feb. 8 respectively. UVU will then conclude its three-dual road trip at Boise State on Feb. 13.
